PDFs are staged in the composer like images and sent with your next message. On Claude, the PDF is read natively page by page - including scans, which are read visually. On other models, the extracted text is provided. Up to 10 MB per file, up to 4 PDFs per message, and (a Claude platform limit) up to 100 pages per document.
A file that merely ends in .pdf but isn't one (a failed download that saved an error page, for instance) is caught at attach time with a clear message instead of a cryptic provider error.
DOCX and XLSX uploads are extracted and saved into FILES, where their content becomes part of your workspace and can be referenced in any conversation.
